The conversation from my client went something like this “Are you free on 14 June ? We can’t tell you what it’s about or who you are photographing, however we need to have you security checked”. This last comment gave me a big clue that it was a special VIP.
Over the years I have photographed a lot of politicians, actors and people who are just famous. I have photographed minor royalty, but this was the first time that I had photographed the Queen.
I was working directly with the Queen’s press secretary. You are not allowed to talk to the Queen and definitely not allowed to ‘direct’ her, so many time I wanted to say “Just hold it there Ma’am” ! Obviously I didn’t.
It was a great day and a wonderful insight into how theses events ‘happen’. I’m glad to say that we conduct ourselves in the same manner to all of our clients, whoever they are. You can never go wrong if you are acting professionally.
I was to be the only photographer allowed into Chester Town Hall to photograph the proceedings leading up to a Civic Lunch. Just me ! Quite a lot of pressure to get it right.
A week before the event there were rumours that the Queen night not be alone, the rumours were right, it was to be the first time that the Queen and Meghan Markle were to be seen on an official engagement together.
